1) Man killed in western Kentucky hydroplane race

LIVERMORE, Ky. - A Tennessee man died Saturday after he was ejected from his boat at hydroplane races on the Green River in western Kentucky. 59-year-old Joe Barnes Sr. of Ripley, Tenn., died instantly when his boat flipped in the air during a quarter-mile qualifying race. It happened at the ninth annual Thunder on the Green in Livermore, and racing was canceled for the rest of the day. Another boat racing at the time was not involved in the accident, Austin said. Barnes had been participating in hydroplane races for at least 15 years. Funeral arrangements were pending.

2) BoatTEST, Boating World are linking up

BoatTEST Publishing and Boating World magazine have announced an alliance under which each will promote the others product and the two will share online boat tests. BoatTEST.coms network of sites will begin promoting Boating World magazine immediately through newsletters and logo/links on its home page. Boating World, in turn, will begin running an ad campaign for BoatTEST.com, effective with its October/November issue.

Boating Worlds database will bring to 750 the number of online boat tests available at BoatTEST.com. The Boating World Web site, in turn, adds full video capabilities and picks up nearly 600 boat tests. In cases where both have tested the same boat, the consumer now gets two points of view. 3) Record-setting RIB Shatters at Sea

Barely 200 miles into a high-speed trans-Atlantic crossing for charity, the RIB Spirit of Cardiff "exploded", according to skipper Alan Priddy. An article in the Telegraph reports the first indication any of the four men on board had that things had gone wrong was when the bow shattered in a split second. All four report that they knew they'd likely drown, but training, experience, Priddy's bravery (he went into the sea, sans survival suit, to recover the emergency kit) and the skill of the RAF's rescue unit extricated all as The Spirit was still (just) barely afloat. In the blink of an eye, a sinking boat can happen to any of us.

4) BRP increasing prices for Johnson outboards

BRP Inc. of Sturtevant, Wis., is increasing dealer base pricing for its midrange and large horsepower Johnson 4-stroke engines in response to the anti-dumping ruling by the Department of Commerce. The ruling, which relates to the anti-dumping complaint filed last January by Mercury Marine, imposes a preliminary 22.52-percent duty against Japanese engines. In order to comply, BRP says Japanese suppliers can either reduce prices in Japan, increase prices in the United States, absorb the duty, or use a combination of all three.

All of the 4-stroke outboards in the 25-hp and above range sold by BRP under the Johnson brand name are imported from Japan, and would therefore be subject to the preliminary duty. Prices of engines in horsepower categories where BRP has E-TEC engines available 40 to 90 hp and 200 to 225 hp will rise 12 percent. Other horsepower categories the 25 to 30 hp and 115 to 140 hp will increase 5 percent. Johnson outboards in the 4- to 15-hp range are built outside of Japan and therefore are not subject to duties.

The price increases take effect immediately, but BRP says it is price protecting firm orders provided to the company by Sept. 8. Once the DOC and the International Trade Commission issue their final decisions after the first of the year, BRP says it will again review the situation.

Note: The articles presented in TBPNews are edited excerpts from the "Secrets of Tunnel Boat Design" book, by Jim Russell, published by AeroMarine Research. The STBD book explains the theory in full, and outlines example design calculations, step-by-step. The "Tunnel Boat Design Program", software, does all the force calculations, dynamic force balances at all speeds, and reports the analysis automatically, including complete graphical performance results for any tunnel or modified vee hull design.
